Choices in the Matter
Life’s full of choices in our everyday lives and roles. Choices aren’t definitive. They are often made with information gathered at any moment. Choices may also carry weight, often collected in our minds and carried on our shoulders.
Choices can be made with many factors in mind, including loved ones, your circumstances, and a pros and cons list. That isn’t to say it is easy to come to a choice, but rather it is nuanced and often has us sitting in the grey to make a certain choice. That middle ground of the grey can be discomforting and ambiguous because there isn’t an all-seeing mirror that shows us the path at the end of that choice or the result we’re longing for.
Here are the steps I take to ease the burden of a choice. I sit down with myself and reflect on my values. I notice what actions align with who I am. I talk to the people I trust and honour their feedback. I pause and breathe before any hard line choices. I clear my head and come back to a choice at a later time for a clarified point of view. I write down what is weighing me down regarding a choice, or I note down the pros and cons of a certain choice. These are some of the meaningful actions I take to make an informed decision. I allow myself to feel and label a mood. This is a reminder that I am human, an informed, messy, thoughtful, and reflective human.
Living as a human being is a reminder that whether a big or small, life-altering decision or just choosing an afternoon snack makes me human.
Slowing down the decision allows an expansive framework to examine the action behind a choice. It can help reframe and redefine what it means to take an informative approach to choices.
