Postcard from the Root

Recently, travelling to El Salvador grounded my spirits. In other posts, I noted being born and living in San Salvador, El Salvador, for the first 6 years of my life. Those years were the formative moments that shaped me into who I am, the moments I have brief memories of. From a multi-generational home to being raised by my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. These formative years have grown the roots I carry, even at a distance, knowing I no longer reside in El Salvador.

The values of family, humility, and hard work ground who I am, thanks to my living and deceased ancestors. These are the experiences and values I hope to pass along to the next generation. I believe a future rooted in community creates grounded efforts of collaboration.

It is with the grounded roots similar to the maquilishuat tree, which blooms every year with bursts of pink, that I give thanks for the opportunity to carry this forth in my own journey through the seasons. My journey has consisted of healing and understanding my own location and who it is I wish to be in this ever-evolving world.

In the midst of internal and external pressures, I carve out the rituals of hope that illuminate a path forward for me. Rituals grounded in community healing, mutual aid, and ancestral wisdom allow me to focus on what is within my capacity rather than remain embedded in the grasp of powerlessness among distressed futures.
