Notes from a place of self-compassion
Self-compassion is the caring effort to recognize your needs as vital. Needs untethered from a culture of production and over-exertion. It is the extra needed comfort of rest and resolve from a gentle approach. You do not earn self-compassion. It is a necessity for existing in a paradigm heavily focused on producing and labouring results under capitalist systems.
When I feel near full capacity, I notice what my body and mind are telling me, helping me recognize my own humanity. I feel the tightness in my body and the mental strain, recognizing the need to slow my breathing and settle into my physical self. I note what’s within reach today and what can be resumed tomorrow. I look toward my supportive measures for grounding and a new perspective for hope.
These self-serving actions help to sustain what it means for me to be a helper and caregiver. Self-compassion is the fundamental factor that drives my being. Without showing myself self-compassion, I get caught in the riptide of productivity. Self-compassion allows me to draw from my cup to help others.
What is self-compassion without recognizing your humanity? Self-compassion is the need to keep giving to myself, my loved ones, and the community around me.
